Now you’re probably thinking, “What? Why would I voluntarily sit around in the dark for an hour?” Well, I’m here to tell you.
Tomorrow, Saturday, March 29, from 8:30pm-9:30pm, millions of people around the world will turn off their lights in honor of Earth Hour.
Earth Hour, which started in 2007, is a worldwide grassroots movement encouraging everyone to protect the planet. Organized by WWF, Earth Hour now engages more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide.
Who exactly is participating?
In addition to individual people, in New York alone there are numerous iconic buildings and landmarks that will go dark to help raise awareness of energy usage and conservation including Times Square, the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, 77 Verizon locales, Niagara Falls, and even the Town of Huntington.
What are you going to do in the dark?
I’ll probably read a book by candlelight, but Inhabitat shared a list of nine ways to spend your time that includes having a candle-lit dinner, enjoying an acoustic jam session, and playing a board game.
So, are you ready to take the challenge? Officially join here: http://www.earthhour.org/join-the-community
While we don’t think the solution to our environmental problems is to turn the lights out, it’s a good reminder of how valuable this resource is, and a great way to bring people together to motivate for awareness and actionable change.
